From Villain to Visionary: Jennifer Yen’s Journey from Power Rangers to Beauty Empire

by | May 2, 2025

Jennifer Yen’s evolution from screen villain to beauty industry powerhouse is a story of resilience, heritage, and reinvention. Best known for her role as the fierce villainess Vypra on Power Rangers, Jennifer spent long days under hot studio lights, heavy makeup, and relentless filming schedules. But behind the scenes, she was fighting a very different battle—with her skin.

The set life wreaked havoc on her complexion. “I tried everything,” Jennifer recalls of her struggle with breakouts, painful acne, and eczema. Her breakthrough came when she turned inward—reconnecting with the natural beauty rituals passed down from her grandmother and mother. This healing journey sparked the birth of her first skincare brand, pūrlisse, blending ancient Asian ingredients with modern skincare science. The brand struck a chord, quickly growing into a beloved staple for clean beauty lovers.

Since then, Jennifer has carved out a formidable space in the beauty industry with three brands: pūrlisse, YENSA, and most recently, JooY. As a first-generation Asian American, she weaves cultural pride and innovation into every formula.

“My identity as an Asian American woman is deeply rooted in the beauty rituals passed down from my grandmother and mother,” says Jennifer. “Their natural, holistic practices laid the foundation for my passion, and today, I carry that legacy forward.”

Motherhood brought another turning point. Experiencing postpartum skin issues led to the creation of YENSA, a “skincare-first beauty” brand infused with Asian superfoods like black sesame oil and shiitake mushroom. “I wanted makeup that works as hard as skincare,” she says.

Her latest venture, JooY, is deeply personal. Inspired by fermented superfoods and driven by her experience with hair shedding, the brand puts scalp health and self-care at the forefront.

Throughout her journey, Jennifer has also faced the challenges of being an AAPI entrepreneur in a space lacking diverse representation.

“When I started, it was rare to see AAPI women in leadership roles in beauty. It felt like we were invisible,” she shares. “But that absence became a call to action.”

As she reflects on AAPI Heritage Month, Jennifer sees it as both a celebration and a call for change. “It’s a moment to honor our ancestors, our stories, and our progress, but also to advocate for more inclusion and leadership.”

Her message to future AAPI founders is simple yet profound:

“Be authentic. Be resilient. Embrace your roots—your uniqueness is your strength.”

From the Power Rangers set to building a beauty legacy, Jennifer Yen continues to inspire women everywhere to lead boldly, dream bigger, and own their stories.
