It’s natural for people to fear the aging process. Especially in today’s world where beauty is placed on a pedestal, we constantly feel the need to hide the fact that we are getting older, despite it being the natural progression of things. However, recent data from porn polls may just shift our views.
For decades, porn has been criticized for unreal depictions of what goes on behind closed doors and clamor from recent years has demanded more of a realistic and relatable approach to a well-loved activity. Pornhub’s recent year in review showed that the third most searched term was “MILF,” a.k.a “Mother I’d Like to F***.” This category features more mature women, typically in their 40s and 50s, and it consistently ranks in terms of searches annually.
Clearly, there’s demand for a specific kind of woman. This is probably also why another one of the site’s longest-viewed and most searched terms was “mature”, hinting at the fact that experience is a preference for a fun romp.
Data like this debunks the societal notion that youth and beauty are the only qualities prized in a sexual partner. It also reiterates something we constantly forget, that age is just a number and doesn’t pigeonhole your sexuality or attractiveness.
Outside of the adult world, the social media platform TikTok has seen a surge in the number of influencers over 40 sharing their stories, experiences, and lifestyle with their audience. Throwing societal perceptions to the wind, it’s freeing to see more women come into their own skin while putting themselves out there, and it’s proving to be lucrative. More brands are capitalizing on the purchasing power of this specific segment, choosing to work with personas that actually represent them.
So what are we all still freaking out about? Maybe getting older isn’t as bad as we think, the whole “aging like fine wine” is an adage for a reason, and we should feel confident no matter the number attached to us. The numbers don’t lie, and they tell us that we are attracted to a diverse range of body types and personalities.
Women most especially, need not feel ashamed of aging gracefully. Instead, we should embrace it. Beauty treatments should be seen as an opportunity to care for ourselves; to boost confidence and not just as a bid to stop the clock. So no matter your age, always give yourself permission to feel sexy— in and out of the bedroom.
