Casa Agave Bedroom

1. What inspired the design of this modernist home?

The design of the house is credited to Architect William Bray, of Los Angeles, after partnering with Westview Development Corporation to create a Golf Course neighborhood in conjunction with the planned Tahquitz Creek Golf Club in 1959. Casa Agave was built in 1965 and sits on the 8th fairway of the Laurence Hughs-designed course.

2. How did you balance functionality and style in the space?

A clear intention in the design of the house was the ease of transition between indoor and outdoor spaces, a popular concept in many mid-century designs of the area. Seamless indoor/outdoor dining and lounges were key elements.

3. Can you share any unique features or innovations incorporated into the design?

We’ve focused on simplicity and uncluttered spaces, with discreet solar panels and nearly silent HVAC systems. Access to the outdoors is immediate from almost every room of the house.

Modernism remains a defining feature of Palm Springs’ architecture, with an increasing emphasis on sustainability and incorporation of earth-friendly materials.

Choosing durable materials that withstand the desert’s rigors was crucial, as was considering ease of cleaning in the dusty environment.

6. What challenges did you face during the design process, and how did you overcome them?

Furnishing the home during the Covid lockdown required patience and research, with much sourced from local consignment shops and online vendors.

7. How did you approach lighting design, especially in a desert environment?

The home features a combination of interior and exterior lighting, with a focus on creating ambiance and highlighting the desert landscape.

8. What advice would you give to homeowners seeking to incorporate modernist elements into their spaces?

Have fun with it! Incorporating vintage elements into modern themes can create unique and exciting spaces.

9. What personal experiences or influences shaped your journey as interior designers?

Our personal interests and passions, including travel, architecture, photography, and botany, have informed every aspect of the design.

10. How does this home reflect your own design philosophy or aesthetic?
