Some songs arrive with careful planning. Others are born from instinct.
For Jessie Altman, her newest single, For The Hell Of It, embraces the beauty of following your heart before fear has a chance to intervene. Released on July 17, the track marks another defining moment in the singer-songwriter’s artistic evolution, offering listeners an anthem about choosing joy, embracing uncertainty, and allowing yourself to experience something extraordinary simply because it feels right.
More than just a summer single, For The Hell Of It serves as the latest preview of Altman’s highly anticipated sophomore album, Lovelight, arriving September 25. The song represents one of the album’s most confident chapters, built on spontaneity, chemistry, authenticity, and the exhilarating freedom that comes from trusting yourself.

Co-written by Jessie Altman alongside acclaimed songwriters Sam Hollander and Grant Michaels, the single captures the excitement of throwing caution to the wind. Hollander’s impressive catalog includes chart-topping hits such as Panic! At The Disco’s High Hopes, Fitz and the Tantrums’ HandClap, Train’s Marry Me, and James TW’s When You Love Someone. Michaels is known for co-writing BANNERS’ platinum-certified Someone To You and has collaborated with artists including Sia, Weezer, Billy Idol, Ringo Starr, Fitz and the Tantrums, and SZA.
“‘For The Hell Of It’ is about the thrill of doing something simply because it feels right. Not overthinking it, not analyzing it, just jumping into the moment. It’s a little reckless, a little playful, and a little seductive. Sometimes the best reason to fall in love is no reason at all,” says Altman.
The single reflects a personal shift for the artist. Rather than searching for love, Altman now writes from the perspective of having found it. The result is a song that celebrates a relationship grounded not in fantasy, but in something authentic, transformative, and unexpectedly life-changing.
That emotional honesty has become a defining characteristic of Altman’s songwriting. Her previous release, Barcelona—inspired by the restaurant where she shared her first date with her now-husband—became her strongest first-week U.S. debut to date. Together, Barcelona and For The Hell Of It offer an intimate glimpse into Lovelight, an album centered on vulnerability, personal growth, and the unexpected ways love has the power to illuminate our lives.
