The Positivity Revolution: How One Amputee Turned Adversity into Strength

by | Mar 22, 2025

“Resilience isn’t just about surviving adversity—it’s about reinventing yourself in the face of it.”

Most people don’t wake up one morning thinking their entire life will change in an instant. But when it does, you have two choices: let it define you, or redefine yourself. Colin Potts, COO of Regenerative Orthopedics & Sports Medicine (ROSM), chose the latter, launching a personal revolution in positivity and resilience that transformed his life—and now, the lives of many others.

Colin’s journey began with a devastating loss, but instead of allowing it to hold him back, he leveraged it as an opportunity to propel himself forward. He discovered that the true power of resilience isn’t just bouncing back—it’s bouncing forward with purpose, clarity, and an unshakable belief that setbacks can be the start of something greater.

Beyond Disability: Lessons from the Journey

After losing a limb, Colin was faced with an unrelenting truth: life as he knew it had changed forever. But instead of mourning what was lost, he focused on what was possible. The experience didn’t just teach him to walk again—it taught him to rethink everything.

He discovered that resilience isn’t about pretending things aren’t hard. It’s about acknowledging the challenge, embracing the discomfort, and taking deliberate steps to move forward. It’s about shifting the focus from what you can’t control to what you can—your mindset, your response, and the way you show up for yourself and others.

From Kitchen to Boardroom: The Chef’s Mindset of Adaptation

Before stepping into his executive role at ROSM, Colin sharpened his problem-solving skills in the fast-paced world of professional kitchens. As a chef, every service was an exercise in controlled chaos—unexpected setbacks, time-sensitive decisions, and the constant demand for creative solutions. He had no idea then that this same mindset would become his greatest asset in overcoming personal adversity.

But his journey of overcoming challenges didn’t start there. Before all of this, he spent years working on Wall Street. By the age of 25, he was running the finances for a division at PaineWebber with just under a billion dollars in revenue. He learned early on that resilience, discipline, and strategic thinking are essential whether managing high-stakes finances or navigating life-changing adversity. Those experiences on Wall Street helped shape his ability to problem-solve under pressure, a skill that became even more valuable after his accident.

When Colin faced the physical and emotional hurdles of recovery, he approached them the same way he tackled challenges in the kitchen—with innovation, adaptability, and an unbreakable work ethic. Just as a chef must pivot when an ingredient is missing or a dish doesn’t go as planned, Colin learned to pivot in life, embracing change rather than resisting it.

Colin Potts turned adversity into strength, proving that positivity and resilience can transform challenges into opportunities.

The Positivity Revolution: A Blueprint for Growth

The most powerful lesson Colin learned? Positivity isn’t just a mindset—it’s a strategy. Here’s how anyone can implement their own “positivity revolution” when faced with adversity:

  • Own the Challenge – Denial prolongs pain. The first step to overcoming any hardship is to acknowledge it fully and honestly.

  • Reframe the Narrative – Instead of asking “Why me?” try asking “What’s next?” Shifting the focus to growth turns obstacles into opportunities.

  • Take One Step at a Time – Big changes feel overwhelming. Focus on one action at a time, no matter how small.

  • Surround Yourself with Strength – Resilience isn’t built in isolation. The right support system makes all the difference.

  • Turn Setbacks into Fuel – Every setback holds a lesson. Use it to sharpen your skills, strengthen your resolve, and refine your purpose.

From Surviving to Thriving

Today, Colin is not just surviving—he’s thriving. His experience fuels his leadership, shaping the way he supports his team, patients, and the broader conversation on resilience and regenerative healing. At ROSM, he champions cutting-edge solutions that help individuals regain mobility and improve their quality of life, proving that recovery isn’t just possible—it’s transformational.

Colin’s story is a testament to the fact that resilience isn’t about avoiding hardship—it’s about using it as a springboard for growth. Whether in the kitchen, the boardroom, or facing life’s unexpected challenges, the principles remain the same: stay adaptable, stay focused, and above all, stay positive.

Because in the end, strength isn’t about what you’ve lost—it’s about what you build in its place.
